Plate Tectonics - Lesson 4 - Part 1 of 8

Series produced in 1976 - Understanding the Earth by Tv Ontario The series host was Dr. David Pearson a renowned English trained, Canadian geologist residing in Sudbury, Ontario. Dr. David Pearson lectured at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. This series was part of a extension course at Laurentian, i believe from 1976 to 1986. Planet of Man Series -- Jigsaw Fit (30minutes) Host Tuzo Wilson Plate Tectonics - Lesson 4 - Component 1 of 8 •Continental shift ole suggestions -- like ships moving on a oceans •6 significant plates divided into series of plates -- comprised both in land and ocean •Plates slide underneath, beside and overtop one yet another •Andes of South America -- Several ranges of north America -- Mountains of the western pacific and Indonesia -- Wonderful Himalayan belt from Asia to western Europe. •Early recognition of the plates -- seismology was utilised to define narrow belts of earthquake activity. •Earthquake activity followed the boundaries of the plate •Animation of a world map, illustrating the earthquake centers caught by seismological equipment •Also discovered all the active volcanoes had been discovered along these earthquake centers •Development of sonar (soon after WWII) they could now map the ocean floor •What they discovered is enormous mountain ranges, and series of quite deep trenches. • Early 60's they discovered the mid atlantic floor they had been really spreading -- sea floor spreading •Thoughts -- if sea floor is spreading?..then there should be some location where the result of the ...

@TheNephewHelix yes. did he predict the earthquake? off by a week if he said it before it happened. not a bad prediction!

@BOYKOILIEV2008

I'm from Chile and it was not in the 3th of March of 2009, indeed we were strucked but it was in the 27th of February of 2010 - 9º ritcher scale - The center of this was Concepcion.

I'm shocked since you told here there was going to be 1 earthquake, 1 year makes a difference yes... but was accurate in the date, except the year.. but you really hit the target

That's bulshit. earthquakes happen with convergent plate boundary and Transform fault. Explain me what else makes them

There will be an strong earthquake in Chile on the 3th of March 2009, M6.
The plate tectonic NOT makes the earthquakes.

I'm glad you like them!... The series has been instrumental in my interest in Earth science. Because of this show, that's why I went into earth science as a career. So I thought, it was only natural to pay homage to the series and get them out of my dusty basement and transfer them digitally.

I am unfortunately missing 3 episodes. If you ever come across anyone that has the complete series too I would interested in contacting them.
